Clipping: Spotting Audio Overload

If your voice sounds harsh, crackly, or distorted on the loudest parts of a recording — even though it sounded fine while monitoring live — you’re almost certainly dealing with clipping: the single most common, and most avoidable, audio problem in podcasting and streaming.

What clipping actually is

Every digital audio system has a hard ceiling — 0 dB — above which it cannot represent a louder sound. When your input tries to exceed that ceiling, the peaks get chopped flat instead of following their natural curve, which you hear as harshness or crackle. Clipping generally can’t be fixed afterward — once the peak is cut off, the information is gone. This is why catching it before or during recording matters far more than catching it after.

Why it happens

Gain set too high for your voice or mic; getting louder or closer to the mic during a take; or multiple audio sources stacking (voice + music + guest mic) so the combined output clips even though each source looked safe alone.

How to spot it yourself

Most streaming software shows a live level meter per source – green for normal, yellow as warning, red at the top. If the meter regularly hits red during normal speech, that’s clipping in progress, not just a “loud” reading.

How to fix it

Lower the input gain so normal speech peaks around -6 dB, leaving headroom. Check the combined output, not just individual sources. Consider a limiter on your mic input as a safety net. Do a loud test (laugh, raise your voice) before recording, not just a calm-speech check.

Why this one matters more than most

Because clipping can’t be repaired after the fact, it’s the clearest example of why a pre-flight check – catching the problem before you go live – is worth far more than post-production cleanup.
